Healing Power – Part I

I am so excited by what God showed me today that I wanted to tell you all about it.  It seemed to me that the best way was to post it here.First a little background:

1)   Last night at during our gathering we discussed in depth the healing that God promised the group, the theology of it all, and the emotions it brought.

2)   I read the Daily Office from the Common Book of Prayer for my Bible reading everyday.  Today’s readings were spot on!

Please read these two passages FIRST (before continuing):

 2 Kings 5.1-19 and 1 Corinthians 4.8-21

I knew I was in for something special today when I read the first passage.  It tells the story of a famous general that was loved by his king but had leprosy.  He needed healing and went to Israel on the advice of a slave girl to get healed.  He took a letter of introduction from his king to the king of Israel.  The king of Israel was distraught.  He could not heal the general.  But God had a man in Israel who could play a role in the general’s healing.  That man was Elisha, a prophet of God in a country who hated prophets of God. The story ends when the general is healed by God and returns home.

The second passage is a church leader, Paul, writing to a church he started to correct some issues they had.  Paul is warning the people who came later and disrupted the church.  He said that he would return and then the church would see whom God approved of leading them, the persuasive new people or the one God used from the start to grow these people into a community of faith.  Paul says there is one distinction that will settle the argument once-and-for-all.  One very exciting thing that separates the pretenders from the overcomers!

These two passages seem unrelated.  They are from vastly different periods in history.  They are separated by at least 1,500 years.  However, when put in the context of our meeting and read back-to-back a crystal clear message appears; a message of hope for those who need healing.

I will continue this in another post Healing Power Part II. I will explain how these two stories are connected and what that might mean for us as a group dependent upon God for our healing.

House2House mini-conference!!!

For our 100th post, I am pleased to announce that the Arkadelphia Simple Church Network will be hosting a House2House mini-conference right here in Arkadelphia!  Saturday, September 3, 2011, we will be meeting at the Wesley Foundation on Henderson’s campus to enjoy the Saturday portion of this year’s House2House conference.

We usually go to the conference, as it has been held in Dallas for several years, but this year, the good people of House2House have decided to share the love with other parts of the country and hold the conference in Jacksonville, FL.  If you can’t afford to fly and it’s too far for you to drive, House2House has set up several mini-conferences site to live-stream the conference to.  We were fortunate enough to be asked to host one this year!  Also, the conference fees can get pretty pricey, but to come to our mini-conference will only cost you $10, which will include a continental breakfast, lunch and dinner.   So come join us at 7:30 am (I know it’s early, but we’re dealing with a time zone change.) for a full day of learning, worship and fellowship!  The conference will probably last until 8:00 pm (or later if you feel like talking).

Here’s that info in table form:

A miracle

Last Wednesday (we changed our during-the-week meeting to Wednesday, as the rest of the Southern US shuts down then anyway), we decided to do a series of blog posts about miracles that have happened to people in our small body of believers.  Just off the top of our heads, we were able to think of five or six stories to share.  Here is mine:

When I was around 18-years-old, I started having problems with my TMJ.  That’s temporomandibular joint for those of you fortunate enough not to know.  In layman’s terms, my jaw was clicking and popping just about every time I opened my mouth to a certain point.  I would also experience extreme swelling to the point where I couldn’t chew because my teeth wouldn’t meet.  This would happen in spells off and on from the time I was 18 until about five years ago.

We were at the House2House National House Church Conference in Dallas, TX.  One of the speakers was a man named Frank Gray, from the Y.E.S. Ministries team.  He was speaking about healing, something that I claimed to believe in, but didn’t really focus on very much.  As an exercise, he had us pair up and pray for each other if any healing was needed.  A lady even younger than I was prayed for me during that meeting that all my problems with my jaw would be healed and that I wouldn’t suffer from it anymore.  At that point, I was not having any particular problems with it anyway, so I didn’t think about it again.  A few months later, we were talking about that meeting as a group, and I realized that I hadn’t had any pain or swelling since that prayer.  I was astounded that God had healed something that was wrong with me, while I had very little faith that he would actually do it.  In the last 5 years, I’ve had zero problems with my TMJ, and can attribute that to the love and healing power of my Father in heaven.

At a more recent house church conference, I spoke again with the girl who had prayed for me (I wish I could remember her name).  She was happy but unsurprised that God had healed me.  This kind of faith moves mountains.

There will be several more posts like this in the next couple of weeks (get me those stories, Church!), and I pray that they strengthen the faith of everyone who reads them.

Fathers’ Day

Happy Fathers’ Day, everyone!  A young lady in our church wrote a blog post especially for today that I would like to share.  I left it exactly as she wrote it, completely from the heart.

Father’s day can be a hard time for young kids and adults. Because some fathers aren’t around for their kids they probably don’t have a need to celebrate father’s day, But they do .I have a cousin who felt left out for years because her older brother has a relationship with his father. This will be her first year to celebrate it, (her mother is getting married) she will have a dad this year to celebrate with. She had a father to celebrate with before and that is her heavenly father he would be happy to fill that place in her heart that was so important and he will do it for anyone who asks. By him being your father you can make a difference on father’s day. You can go out and work for the lord and people about your father, God in heaven. Even if you have an earthly father you can still go out and celebrate with your heavenly I plan to try and do that if at all possible. Thank God for being our father especially the ones who really need one. So this father’s days go out and make a difference, and if your children don’t have a father celebrate father’s day with God!

The Church in Action

I (April) wanted to share a little bit about my church peeps being awesome.

Here’s the background:
My husband is a full-time high-school band director and he’s in the National Guard, so he has to be gone a lot. He’s about to come home from a two-week long military training. It’s always hard to be away from your spouse, but it’s especially hard for me right now because I’m currently a stay-at-home-mom and we have an 18-month-old son and a 2-year-old son (he’s almost 3). My family all live at least four hours away.

So…
In the last two weeks, my church friends have helped clean my house twice, cooked me dinner, fixed my air-conditioner, mowed my lawn, baby-sat, dog-sat (so I could go visit family) and kept me company. And a lot of this help was given without me even having to ask. It’s difficult (and a little embarrassing) to accept so much help, but I know I’ve needed it.

I don’t often speak in absolutes, but this is what every church should be like. This is what Jesus Christ wants for his Body. He wants us to love each other and to put that love into action. If we are living in the love of Jesus, that love will overflow into loving action toward others. I thank God for my church.

We love because He first loved us. 1 John 4:19
